My Thoughts It is always nice to have a PR69 or a PR70 DCAM (Deep Cameo) coin in your collection, but at what cost? Are modern proof coins in these grades a good buy? I have seen price listing for the high grade modern proofs and feel that they are just so much hype and price listing created by the grading services. How much should a person pay for such coins? With the cost of having a coin certified, not may people are willing to send in less valuable coins to have them graded and slabbed. This is left to the few dealers who can afford to do so because of shear volume and discounts. This leaves you the buyer at the whim of those few. Since there are millions of proof sets that could be broken apart and each coin certified, the number of these high grade proofs are sure to increase. I do not believe that the supply and demand for such coins will stabilize for many years. As more and more coins are certified at these levels the prices will have to fall from their current levels. I have already seen this happening. Once again it is “Buyer Beware” don’t
get caught up in the hype or belief that you are getting a rare coin because
the grade is PR69 or PR70 DCAM. Take a look at some of your modern
proof sets and see how many of the coins would grade above PR68 DCAM. If
you have any modern proof sets then I assure you that you already have
some of these coins.
