My Thoughts
A lot has been said about the grading services grading modern proof coins PR69 and PR70 DCAM (Deep Cameo). Here are MY thoughts on the subject. The grading standards have been established and need to be followed. Modern technology has improved the quality of coins the mint produces. All or nearly all of the modern proof coins are deep cameos, this was not a fact when the grading standards were established. Looking back at the certified proof coins from the 1950’s, 60’s and early 70’s the grades assigned to them they seem to be pretty accurate. Take any PR 67 coin from that time and compare it to a modern proof coin, say from 1992 and assign a quick grade. Some people say that this is like comparing apples and oranges but in reality we are only comparing proof coins from different time periods. The Sheldon grading system is set on a scale of 1-70 and does not allow for expansion. Therefor if you are looking at a proof coin from 1970 and it is rated at PR68 and then look at a proof coin from 1992 and you quickly see a 2 or 3 point difference, where does one rate the 1992 coin? Are these modern proof coins being
over graded? I think not.
